Abstract
Religion has played a significant role in shaping
Nigerian politics, influencing both policy-making and electoral outcomes. This
paper explores the multifaceted impact of religion on Nigeria’s political
landscape, examining how religious affiliations and identities affect political
behavior, governance, and national unity. While religion often serves as a
source of social cohesion, it has also been a catalyst for conflict and
political manipulation, sometimes undermining democratic principles and
sustainable development. Through a critical analysis of historical and
contemporary events, the study highlights the challenges and opportunities that
religion presents to Nigeria’s political stability. It further discusses
prospects for leveraging religious diversity as a tool for inclusive governance
and sustainable political development. The paper argues that promoting
interfaith dialogue, religious tolerance, and institutional reforms can
mitigate sectarian tensions and contribute to long-term political stability and
development in Nigeria. This research offers valuable insights for
policymakers, scholars, and civil society actors interested in fostering a more
harmonious and sustainable political future in Nigeria.
