Abstract
The Africa-India oceanic groupings, centered around
the strategic expanse of the Indian Ocean, have grown increasingly significant
as regional and global dynamics evolve in the twenty-first century. This
article examines the multi-dimensional nature of cooperation between African
coastal states and India, analyzing contemporary trends in maritime security,
trade, infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and
geopolitical strategy. Using qualitative methodologies, including policy and
institutional analysis, this study highlights how historical maritime ties are
transforming into strategic partnerships addressing new-age challenges such as
piracy, climate change, and the influence of extra-regional powers. The article
underscores the critical role of ocean governance frameworks like the Indian
Ocean Rim Association (IORA) in facilitating multilateral dialogue and
cooperation. Furthermore, the study examines economic interdependence and
infrastructural investments that seek to leverage the ocean’s commercial
potential. The discussion elucidates persistent challenges including asymmetric
capabilities, institutional constraints, and competing external interests. The
conclusion calls for enhanced, inclusive cooperation mechanisms and investment
in sustainable development to ensure the long-term security and prosperity of
the Africa-India oceanic corridor.
