Abstract
Academic stress is a significant concern among students, impacting
their mental health and academic performance. This study investigates the
effect of counseling on reducing academic stress among students in government
and private schools. The research examines how structured counseling
interventions alleviate academic stress and improve coping mechanisms. A sample
of 40 students (20 from government and 20 from private schools), aged 13-18
years participated in the study. Pre-test and post-test assessments were
conducted using the Academic Stress
Scale (Md Akram, Md Khan and Sahiba Baby) to measure academic stress and engagement levels before and
after the intervention. The intervention consisted of weekly counseling
sessions over four weeks, focusing on reducing academic stress level and its
various triggers among school students. Data analysis involved mean, standard
deviation, paired t-tests to compare pre and post-intervention scores to
evaluate the effect of counselling on student’s stress levels of government and
private schools. The results indicated a significant decline in academic stress
post-counseling showing marked progress. The current study concludes that
counseling significantly reduces academic stress among students. Implementing
comprehensive counseling programs in schools can also aids in fostering a
supportive environment, promoting mental wellbeing and academic success.
