Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a transformative force in higher education, influencing teaching, learning, administration, and institutional practices worldwide. This study examines the emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges associated with the integration of AI in higher education institutions. The study adopts a qualitative review-based methodology using secondary data collected from academic journals, books, policy reports, and research publications. The findings reveal that AI technologies such as adaptive learning systems, intelligent tutoring systems, predictive analytics, chatbots, and generative AI tools are enhancing personalized learning, student engagement, academic support, and administrative efficiency. AI also supports inclusive education through assistive technologies and improves decision-making through data-driven institutional management. However, the study identifies several ethical and practical challenges, including data privacy concerns, algorithmic bias, academic dishonesty, digital inequality, and excessive dependence on technology. The growing use of generative AI tools has further raised concerns regarding plagiarism and reduced critical thinking among students. The study concludes that while AI offers significant opportunities to improve the quality and accessibility of higher education, its successful implementation requires ethical governance, digital literacy, institutional preparedness, and a balanced human-centered educational approach to ensure sustainable and responsible integration in the future.
